| Description: | Unpaid intern will intimately work with business leaders, business editors, book publishers, media professionals (radio, TV, meeting planners) and other business practitioners as we position our business expert clients to be viewed as "thoughtleaders." Intern will also communicate directly with our client thoughtleaders, chiefly management consultants, attorneys, finance experts, leadership trainers and CEOs, as they manage projects involving getting articles and books published, arranging speaking engagements, generating publicity opportunities, conducting research projects and organizing special events.
What Intern Will Learn:
Intern will learn intricacies of such pivotal business areas as business development, branding, marketing communications, management consulting, customer service, surveys & research, competitive advantage, Internet strategies, strategic planning & strategic implementation, career advancement and job-hunting strategies. Program follows concepts found in book by emersongroup president and founder Ken Lizotte, “The Expert’s Edge: Become The Go-To Authority People Turn To Every Time,” published by McGraw-Hill. Intern will work directly under Ken’s supervision.
Intern will also become knowledgeable about management, consulting, media, book & article publishing, TV/radio, podcasts, blogging and a wide range of business specialties. Hands-on day-to-day activities will be performed at the highest professional levels, i.e., interactions with business editors and other media, writing & editing, communicating directly with our “client thoughtleaders,” developing significant research projects and brainstorming new ideas. In addition, field trips to professional associations, business conferences, networking events, relevant historical sites and museums are integrated into workweek. Specific destinations may include such emersongroup affiliates as the Institute of Management Consultants, Harvard University, Concord Museum, the Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House and the CEO Club of Boston.
What Intern Will Achieve:
Upon successful completion of this program, intern will have earned or achieved:
• In-depth knowledge of business and professional disciplines
• In-depth experience with media and publishing
• Access to hundreds of business contacts for career advancement
• Favorable recommendation written by Ken personally to be used for future academic programs, internships and job candidacies. This support will be available indefinitely in the years following completion of the internship.
• Media and publishing clippings to be used as professional credits in job-hunting portfolios
• Authorship of at least one business article to be published by a business journal, e-newsletter or knowledge website under intern’s own by-line
Duties:
Intern will perform some or all of the following functions:
• Publishing articles: Develop article ideas, query editors of business, professional and industry publications, edit articles, write one or more articles for publication (to be by-lined under intern's own name), conduct research on industry and business publications
• Publishing books: Edit books and book chapters, research book publishers, query book publishers, develop and edit book proposals, edit book manuscripts, promote and sell clients’ books
• Publishing blogs: Develop, write and post company blog entries
• PR & Publicity: Compose press releases, distribute press releases, create media lists, pitch to editors and reporters, consult with clients over media issues, devise media campaigns, field media questions
• Public Events: Organize events, attend and participate in networking functions, meeting planning, facilities coordination, hosting business events
• Research: Learn & utilize resource databases (of publications, books, professional associations etc.), conduct surveys, interview authors and experts for articles or a book, conduct research project, track and measure contact database movements
• Sales & Marketing: Develop new client business (including sales and marketing support), develop marketing materials
• Internet Actions: Brainstorm effective website and email strategies, write/re-write website copy, maintain email databases, evaluate clients' websites, blogging, blog campaigns, social networking sites, business contact operation
• Speaker Management: Research speaking engagement data, coordinate speaking engagements with clients and meeting planners, arrange speaking engagements, conduct campaign for speaking engagement targets, attend and evaluate speaking engagements, deliver a public talk or presentation, develop webinars & PPT presentations
• Office Procedures: Maintain files and office systems, store & maintain publications and client materials, answer phones, greet visitors, work with others in group projects
• TV/Radio: TV production in state-of-the-art studio, radio program placement
In general, intern will be involved in ALL areas of our business, including those services and functions on the highest levels. 95% of intern’s time will be spent on challenging projects. The above list is representative but NOT exhaustive!

| Requirements: | Qualifications Needed:
Literary, editing and writing skills; interest in article/book publishing; interest in media, publicity and PR; curiosity about business consulting, management and business specialties; personable manner, sense of humor, reliability, patience, tolerance, ability to work well with others; exceptional phone and email skills; personal initiative, creative problem-solving abilities, quick decision-making skills; familiarity with Word, Excel and the Internet. Candidate must own a wireless-ready laptop and cell phone. A car would be helpful, though not mandatory.
Schedule:
This unpaid internship includes coverage of all fees, program materials, expenses for events and field trips and reimbursement for related business expenses.
