Description: The Genocide Intervention Network will change the way the United States and the international community respond to the world's worst crime by empowering individuals and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide. The organization's aim is to recruit a committed and diverse group of individuals and communities to form an active network that educates their communities, pressures their elected officials and fundraises directly for civilian protection. Currently, the work is focused on ending the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan, where more than 400,000 people have been killed and over 2.5 million have been displaced; providing material support for African Union peacekeepers in the region; and organizing political action campaigns for a more robust civilian protection force. Benefits for all internships: Interns will receive $70 per month in SmartBenefits to cover local transportation costs. Lectures, panel discussions and other events are also frequently made available through allied organizations in the Darfur and anti-genocide movements. Advocacy Intern The Genocide Intervention Network seeks one highly motivated and independent college student to assist with advocacy initiatives. The advocacy internship requires at least 30 hours per week. Start and end dates can be negotiated. Job Description: The Advocacy Intern will assist in the production of advocacy materials and development of programs with the goal of providing concerned individuals and communities the opportunity to influence U.S. and international response to the ongoing genocide in Darfur. Specific duties will include: * Updating the advocacy section of the website (www.GenocideIntervention.net/advocate/) * Updating the Darfur Scores website (www.DarfurScores.org) * Communicating with STAND students, GI-Net members and concerned individuals on advocacy matters * Developing materials for specific advocacy campaigns * Distribution of materials/programs to other organizations * Recruiting possible constituent leaders in key districts/states * Recruiting possible media contacts in key districts/states * Making appointments on Capitol Hill * Researching related to legislation * Additional writing and research as needed
Requirements: Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have strong attention to detail, excellent writing skills, and strong oral communication skills. The ability to manage multiple tasks, work towards multiple goals, problem-solve and prioritize assignments is a must. Candidates should also have demonstrated creativity, flexibility, and stress management skills. Most notably, candidates must have the ability to work independently and as a team member. Priority will be given to candidates who have experience working with databases (MS Excel and QuickBooks are preferred).
